Get More Done In Less Time: 5 Tips To Hacking Parkinson’s Law

"Work expands to fill the time available."
- Parkinson's Law

Probably not a popular opinion, but hard work and hours aren't the same thing.

WHAT’S PARKINSON’S LAW?

Parkinson's law is the theory that work will expand to fill the allotted time. So whether you think a task will take one week or one month, if you schedule it accordingly, that's how long it will take. Much of this has to do with the way our brains are wired. That’s why a lot of us who are hustlers and go-getters tend to not get anything done, despite our best intentions.

Here's 5 tips to supercharging your productivity so that you cam get more out of your time.

Let’s get to it.

TIP #1. PLAN YOUR WORK STRATEGY

During a shoot day, we have a detailed shotlist where we schedule all the shots minute-by-minute or hour-by-hour. Usually this results in longer, emotional hugs from our editors.

TIP #2. SET TIGHTER TIMELINES

Do a trial-run of the tasks you spend a lot of time on and impose a shorter-than-usual timeline. You might be surprised that what you used to do in three hours could be done in one.

TIP #3 - RACE THE CLOCK, CELEBRATE

Set a timer. If you're able to accomplish a task and can beat the clock, reward yourself. We like Junior's cheesecake. Small motivators go a long way.

TIP #4 - CREATE A CONSEQUENCE

Raise higher stakes and try working on your laptop WITHOUT A CHARGER. You'll force yourself to get (sh)it done before it runs out of power.

Here’s to getting more out of your time. 🥂 Stay Focused!
